Tierra, by Eloy Moreno

Earth

In 2020, the Spanish writer Eloy Moreno presented his novel Earth, a story about two brothers and their father's promise to them. The plot reveals the extravagant world behind television and entertainment in a program seen all over the planet. Eventually, the author uses a compelling narrative to show the relationship between the two stories.

Some literary critics have highlighted the thematic actuality and the novel stylistic characteristics of this contemporary novel. And it is not for less, elements such as television or social networks are decisive in the development of the plot. For this reason, Earth represents a rather ingenious way of approaching the reader to the complex and contradictory human condition.

Synopsis of Earthby Eloy Moreno

A man with a lot of power in the television and entertainment industry makes a rare promise to his two young children, Nelly and Alan. Specifically, the proposition is that if these brothers finish a game, their father will fulfill the wish they love the most. However, the game is interrupted: in the blink of an eye thirty years pass, and with them great changes take place in the family.

Play resumed

Ya in mature age, Nelly receives a mysterious box containing a cell phone, a ring and a key. Thanks to the mobile, she is reunited with her brother (with whom she did not speak) and will resume the unfinished game. This is how the opportunity arises for the protagonist to fulfill her wish, since Alan had already achieved it a long time ago.

At the same time, the game is going to link with a reality television show that has the whole world attentive to its development. This program revolves around eight human beings who go from Earth to the planet Mars. Meanwhile, in Iceland, Nelly and her brother learn revealing aspects of the contradictory human condition on a planet in danger.

Meta

This book not only tells a story intertwined with others, but also proposes a constant reflective state about current reality. Likewise, the narrative style structured in short chapters with alternating stories increases the readers' curiosity about the events that will take place on the next page. Eloy Moreno more than achieves your purpose of keep the viewer on edge.

Apparently, the author's bet is to make the reader enjoy the rarity implicit in the two central stories of the novel. That is, both that of these two brothers who receive a promise and grow apart from each other, as well as that of the participants of the television show. Eventually, a common background in all those lives is very slowly being discovered.

A book about the present of humanity

For its fresh and quite up-to-date perspective, Earth It is a difficult book to put down after you have started to read it. From this renewed style, Eloy Moreno tries to expose the subject with communicative forms recognizable for the public of the XXI century. In the text, the focus falls on the human condition, seen from a time marked by hyperconnection.

In addition, many difficult topics are addressed through a mix —Very original, by the way— direct verb with a very frank argument. The topics explored range from the ecological damage perpetrated by humans to the planet, to the moral attitude (apparently) imposed from social networks.

A pleasant text for deep reflection

En Earth, Eloy Moreno exposes a narrative capable of generating engagement and awakening the empathy of readers through many ins and outs - surprising, for the most part. Each of them, at some point, becomes a crucial issue. As you can read on the back cover of the novel, you want to find the truth, but, "the problem of looking for the truth is finding it and not knowing what to do with it."

For these reasons, it is a book that invites you to discover the real lives of the characters, and, perhaps hopefully, the reader reflects on theirs. That way, Earth by Eloy Moreno tries to bring readers closer to the most complicated part of the condition of the human being.

Opinions about the book

Critics praise Eloy Moreno's ability to hold the reader's interest, even though the novel's core is soon revealed. Some voices, on the other hand, speak of a “bestseller simple ”, due to the supposed (simple) commercial structure of the book. In any case, all the appreciations about Earth they are true: hooking power, simplicity and originality.
